I have recently been approached by a VI Athlete to coach him in Triathlon, which for me will be a first. So any advice would be a great help. I am looking forward to working along side him. I am not concerned over his swimming but any advice, places to review resource etc. Thanks in anticipation.
Happy to point you in the direction of some further learning around coaching a person with a visual impairment. I interviewed VI coach Rosie Pybus recently, who is visually impaired herself and a ConnectedCoaches member and she passes on lots of great advice in this blog...
From an organisational perspective, there is some important general advice on coaching VI participants in this blog with British Blind Sport, including the importance of building coaches' confidence.
UK Coaching have a fab Top Tips guide to coaching people with a VI here...
And finally, UK Coaching have recently produced an online course to help coaches feel more confident including people with a VI in their sessions, which has had some excellent feedback...
Best of luck to the pair of you.
I am new to ConnectedCoaches, so hope this gets to you!
I myself am Visually Impaired, I play Goalball as a player but also am qualified to teach/coach other sighted/VI's at novice level.
I think all those blogs and websites are great to look through, but i also feel that communication is key. It's like anyone else, just because "this way" is best for this person, it might not work for a similar person. So definitely have a look at those blogs etc. so you have an understanding but then perhaps sit down with the person and talk through it all. Ask them questions, maybe if they've done this sort of thing before, how did they do it then? If not, then it's a learning journey for you both. If you try something and it doesn't work, adapt and develop. Be open, be honest and I'm sure you'll both get there!
